KARL MARX
(1818 – 1883)
· He was a Prussian-born philosopher,
economist, political theorist, sociologist, journalist, and revolutionary
socialist
· More commonly remembered as a revolutionary
advocate of communism, Marx was in fact also a classical economist
· His theories essentially predicted that
capitalism would lead to fluctuations and economic crises
· In 1848, he published The Communist Manifesto with Friedrich Engels and was exiled to
London, where he wrote the first volume of Das
Kapital and lived for the rest of his life.
· Marx's theories about society, economics, and
politics—collectively understood as Marxism—hold
that human societies develop through class struggle
· His work in economics laid the basis for much
of the current understanding of labour and its relation to capital, and
subsequent economic thought
· Many intellectuals, labour unions, artists
and political parties worldwide have been influenced by Marx's work, with many
modifying or adapting his ideas.
· Marx is typically cited as one of the
principal architects of modern social science.
SOME OF HIS FAMOUS QUOTES
· “The oppressed are allowed once every few
years to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class are to
represent and repress them.”
· “The philosophers have only interpreted the
world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it. [These words are
also inscribed upon his grave]”
· “The last capitalist we hang shall be the one
who sold us the rope.”
· “If money is the bond binding me to human
life, binding society to me, connecting me with nature and man, is not money
the bond of all bonds? Can it not dissolve and bind all ties? Is it not,
therefore, also the universal agent of separation?”
· “The road to Hell is paved with good
intentions.”
· “Religion is the sigh of the oppressed
creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions.
It is the opium of the people.”
